Wicking occurs when the carpet pile is cleaned and the stain looks removed, but as the fibers begin to dry, the stain and its coloring can resurface. This happens because the stain was set in and reached the backing of the cushion (pad) of the carpet. When the pile of carpet dries from the cleaning, the stain and coloring can seep through from the backing because it was wet as well. This does not mean the carpet is still dirty.
